Description
North America, United States, New York, ca. 1830 or 1832 CE. American Tract Society, Revised Second Edition of "Memoir of Henry Obookiah, a Native of the Sandwich Islands, Who Died at Cornwall Connecticut, February 17, 1818, Aged 26." By Rev. E. W. Dwight, First Instructor of the "Foreign Mission School." Obookiah was the simplified, phonetic spelling of Henry Opukahaia (1792 -1818), a native Hawaiian who traveled to New Haven Connecticut, converted to Christianity, and was tutored by Yale student Edwin Dwight and Yale president, Timothy Dwight IV. Opukahaia planned to return to Hawaii to teach Christian beliefs but met a premature death, and his memoir was published shortly after. This second edition was revised and published in 1830 or 1832. This book is beautiful - bound in a stamped brown cloth on paperboard covers, 124 pages with an illustrated portrait of Opukahaia. A remarkable tale of an extraordinary life! Size: 4" L x 0.5" W x 6.25" H (10.2 cm x 1.3 cm x 15.9 cm)
