Title: Heart Shaped Pitcher - English - Staffordshire

Description: This beautiful pitcher is 6 1/2" tall and is in great condition. It is heart shaped and done in red and gold...perhaps a design released for Valentine's Day?? It was made in 1891 based on the confluence of these interesting facts:; It is stamped "England", which was required as of 1891 and it has the makers mark "S. H." which was discontinued by the maker in the same year...so that makes dating this piece quite simple (for once!); The pitcher was made by Sampson Hancock of Tunstall (Stoke-on-Trent), Staffordshire, England. That company changed its name and its mark to S. H. and Sons, or S. H. & H. in 1891, so it is pretty safe to assume it was made sometime that year.; The pattern is Derby Japan. It looks like the word is Cerby, but that is just the result of error when applying the transfer. The registration number, 98321, is impressed and indicates that the shape of the pottery was registered (and protected) as of 1881. The body of the pitcher has a rope border around the upper 1/3, it is transfer printed in red, and then painted red and gilded by hand.; The condition is very good with no cracks, chips, or repairs. There is some wear to the gilding on the top of the handle and the lip of the pitcher. The pictures show that it is minor overall. The body is flawless.$1.00
