Description

Title: Rare "Bell Toy" Pattern Staffordshire Blue and White

Description: This small dish is a very rare piece of British Staffordshire earthenware pottery. Made in the rare "Bell Toy" pattern, probably in the late 18th century. unbroken examples are on every serious collector's list. It is almost 6" across and 1.25 " high. The condition is good with no chips or cracks or repairs. It has a lightweight body and a soft feeling glaze. The glaze is crackled of course, but there is no discernable wear or noticeable scratches on the face of the piece. There are few very small places on the rim where the glaze seems to have been affected by the stand it was on in the kiln. At first, I thought they were tiny chips in the glaze, but on close examination, there is pooling of the glaze at those points indicating that most of these imperfections occurred in the kiln. Separately, there is a small bit of glaze missing from the rim as the result of damage or wear, but it is inconsequential. There is a photo of that. Overall, the glaze is 99% good.; The only known examples of this pattern are pieces made by Caughley between 1780-1790 and by William Littler when he may have been employed by a member of the Baddeley family (1777-1784).; This is the only example of the pattern I have found in over 40 years of collecting. If you have any other information about this piece, it would be most welcome.
