Cornelia Adele Strom Fassett (DC/IL, 1831-1898), Hannah Georgia Bryan Screven and James Procter Screven, Watercolor, 1859, comprising a seated portrait of Hannah Georgia Bryan Screven and a portrait of her husband James Procter Screven, Mayor of Savannah from 1856-1857, both in giltwood oval frames, with handwritten inscriptions on verso. Frame size: 21 5/8 x 18 5/8 in.Provenance: Purchased from John R. Elliot, Branford Rare Books, Branford CT, 2017.
Cornelia Adele Strong Fassett was a painter known for her depictions of American political figures. The Florida Case Before the Electoral Commission is her most famous work, alongside her portraits of the U.S. presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and James A. Garfield. Later in life Fassett also painted portrait miniatures. Her paintings hang in the U.S. Capitol and the New York Historical Society, and can be found in numerous other collections including the Chicago Public Library and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Condition
Overall good condition, some minor losses to paint in Hannah's hair and dress, scratches on surface in background of James' portrait, small tear in background to right of James head, toning to paper on both, not viewed out of frames, frames with wear and losses.
