Description
Southeastern Germany. Jan Jansson, Franconiae Nova Descriptio, from Atlas Novus..., 1646 (circa). Hand Color. This elegantly engraved map focuses on the Franconia region of Germany, located in Bavaria. It spans from Frankfurt in the west to Regensburg in the southwest and identifies several towns and cities, including Bamberg, Nuremberg, and Wurtzburg. There is excellent topographical detail, with an emphasis on the region's rivers and forests. The strapwork title and distance scale cartouches are draped with grapevines, a nod to Franconia's wines. Another cartouche at top right includes a dedication to Franciscus, bishop of Bamberg, by Nicolaus Rittershusius. The directions in the borders have been switched in error, with "Oriens" at left and "Occidens" at right, but the map itself is traditionally oriented. Latin text on verso, published between 1646-57.
