Description
A pair of painted wooden 'Crate' chairs A pair of painted wooden 'Crate' chairs, attributed to Gerrit Rietveld, each made from pine boards and painted, 57cm wide 62 and 63cm deep 76.5cm high, seat 38.5cm high (2) Provenance: Acquired from a private Dutch collection near Utrecht. Following the Great Depression, Rietveld, hitherto known for his uncompromisingly aesthetic furniture, designed a line of inexpensive furniture made from low quality wood such as that used in packing cases. In order to keep the price down, the wood was simply cut and assembled with screws rather than any joints. Each of the chairs here has been nailed together and painted.
