Germany,1831-1905
Depicts a gray horse with short cropped tail and a saddle on back standing inside a barn. Volkers studied at the Dresden Academy of Art, receiving many orders from the aristocracy upon finishing his studies. Volkers was the court painter for Prince Charles of Romania and commissioned by William I to paint him on horseback. His work was greatly appreciated for his equestrian portraits and his skill with anatomy of the animal.

Signed and dated "E. Volkers 1895" lower left corner.
