A personal military archive, relating to Major William Douglas Grant Batten (1891-1934), Indian Army, 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles, early 20th century and first world war period; large collection of photographs, letters (military and domestic), diary, telegrams and ephemera, including Mesopotamia in wartime. Batten was British agent and Consul at Jeddah during 1920 and 1921, then deputy political officer to Harry St John Philby, Trans-Jordan in 1922 (Philby was the father of the spy Kim Philby).
