Item Details
Description
Colville (John Rupert), Alan Lascelles & George Macaulay Trevelyan Group of letters between John ('Jock') Colville, Alan Lascelles and George Macaulay Trevelyan, mostly discussing the figure of Richard III, including: a typed letter from Trevelyan to Colville, saying "The standard of criminality in the governing class of England in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries was, I think, higher than Miss Tey recognises. I cannot agree with her that Richard III was a good man who came to London intending to be a good uncle to the dear little boys and then was suddenly faced with the unexpected news that they were bastards, and so, with a tear in his eyes, had to accept the crown", two pages, 4to, 22 April 1952; an autograph letter from Trevelyan to Colville, reading "Yes, do please look us up here when you are in Cambridge. We are generally in at tea [...] I see that Buckingham's rebellion against R.III began as a movement to put back Ed. V on the throne. It is then that the murder of the Princes was alleged to have taken place. A cleverer motive for a murder would hardly be wanted. When the death of the Princes became known (or rumoured), the rebellion was switched off onto the cause of Richmond. Also, if R.III and everyone else regarded the children of Ed IV as really bastards [...] why did Richard plan to marry Elizabeth of York to strengthen his claim?", two pages, 4to, 24 April 1952; an autograph letter from Lascelles to Colville, reading in part "To make an honest woman of a king's bastard daughter is quite another thing from acknowledging a king's bastard son as one's sovereign. Whether Elizabeth of York was legitimate or not, Richard could always have said of their children "In their veins runs the blood of my dear brother", which is all he wanted. No the better argument [..]for Richard having planned to marry Elizabeth is that even he could hardly have done so comfortably had he just murdered both her brothers", two pages, 8vo, Buckingham Palace, 29 April 1952, and others (9)
