Description
Flat-woven and beautifully crafted by Armenian artisans, the antique Shiraki Kilim rug is woven traditionally in two parts and joined at the center. Shiraki, which means needlework, and Kilim, which are generally flat-woven, are typically produced in Turkey, Kurdistan, the Caucasus, Iran, and western Turkestan. Armenian rugs were status symbols placed on the floor or hung on the wall to create an ambiance within the interior, as they are diverse in style and rich in color and ornamental motifs. According to Arthur T. Gregorian, "A great preference for delicate shades of soft blue, touches of green, coral, old gold and tans. All of the rugs were woven with wool, which was typically obtained locally with cotton being used as weft-threads and for edging.
