Description
Giuseppe Andreini / Andreoni (Italian 19th/20th century), untitled, 1910, alabaster and marble sculpture depicting Sapho seated on a bench with scroll and lyre, resting on a green veined marble pedestal with twisted standard, signed "A. Andreini/Florence/1910" to the left side. Note: An identical composition of mixed marble on pedestal by Ferdinando Adreini (Italian 1843-1922) was sold at Sotheby's London, 19th and 20th century European Sculpture, November 11, 2008, lot 66. Approx. sculpture h. 21", w. 27.5", d. 19"; pedestal h. 30.25", w. 29.5", d. 15.5".
Condition
The sculpture is in three pieces, the figure, bench, and base. The figure is yellowed with scattered chips including to the scroll and hem of dress, areas of restoration and overpaint to the raised leg and front/hem of skirt with loss of decoration to Greek Key pattern, three toes on lowered foot missing, the bench has multiple chips to the front base of bench not visible when the figure is in place, multiple repaired cracks to the front and back mainly visible under ultraviolet light with 1.5" chip to the rear base, there are small chips and or rough areas to the edges, the base is broken into approximately four pieces with two visible cracks with chips to the front and back, the pedestal has chips mainly to the underside of the platform, chips to shaft under the twisted section with chips to the octagonal plinth base. Both are structurally sound and would recommend professional installation.
