Description
HEMINGWAY, ERNEST Autograph letter signed.
San Francisco de Paula, Cuba: 11 April 1959. A 1 1/4 page autograph letter in blue ink signed "Ernie" on one sheet of Hemingway's Finca Vigia San Francisco de Paula, Cuba stationery, 11 x 8 1/2 inches (28 x 22 cm), offered with a few copy prints of Hemingway, one framed. The letter fine and dark, acquired from David Schulson Autographs.
A fine letter with good content written from Cuba by Ernest Hemingway just weeks before heading to Spain for "The Dangerous Summer." The letter is written to George (likely George Brown) reporting "Saw your tiger George Plimpton here for 3 days or so ... We got back Easter Sunday, drove to Key West from Ketchum via ... Vegas - Phoenix - Tuscon - El Paso - Eagle Pass - Corpus Christie - N. Orleans - Biloxi - Apalachucola - Sarasota - Fine Trip - Ed Hotchner and I drove then we dropped him off at the airport in New Orleans and I drove on down to Key West with Mary - went to church there on Easter then flew over here - ... Have to go to Spain for a while but N.Y. on April 22 ... will probably go to that hood hangout Savoy Plaza as it is closest to everything ... Sail noon Sat on Independence - keep all this to yourself!" Hemingway continues discussing his wife and his health: "Am very sharp and strong again, won quite a little dough shooting... get the reading on the liver tomorrow - Hope it is ok - feels good - can drink ok..." He closes noting that he "Wrote very good out West and the climbing and shooting was wonderful..." A fine letter covering much ground from Papa Hemingway.
