Description
Japanese Print: Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) 1786-1864 depicts a scene from a Kabuki performance of the Asago Monogatari. Featured in the rich design are the Actors Bando Shuka I as Miyuki, later Asagao (R), and Ichigawa Danjuro VIII as Miyagi Asojiro (L). Another version of the scene can be found in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts (11.22376-7). The most famous print artist during his life time, Kunisada was very prolific, producing between 20,000 - 25,000 print designs. The grain of the cherry woodblock, picked-up during printing, is visible in the sky area of the composition. Its presence suggests the impression was made during his lifetime. The image is a diptych. In 1844, Kunisada took the name of his master, Toyokuni III.
