Cagney writes a series of social letters, although makes reference to his memories of early theatres in New York ('A friend of mine....was there when they cancelled Sophie Tucker for singing ''Who paid the rent for Mrs. Rip Van Winkle when Rip Van Winkle went away'''), a biographical play about Lenny Bruce ('They are trying to make a martyr of him'), and also recounts a story 'about two ''lads'' meeting in the street....''Did you hear about Mulligan?'' The second said, ''What about Mulligan?'' ''He's in the hospital.'' ''I know, I put him there.'' ''In the name of God, why did you put him there?'' ''I got tired of hearing what a good Catholic he was. He's really a protestant from Belfast. He's been fooling everyone for a long time. Finally, I faced him with it. I said, ''You're a Catholic are you?'' He said, ''I am.'' I said, ''All right, if you're such a good Catholic, do you know the Rosary?'' He said, ''I do.'' I said, ''All right, give it to me.'' He said, ''The hours I spent with thee dear heart'', and with that I knocked the hell out of him. It's an old one, but I think a good one and had an idea you might get a chuckle out of it.'
