Description
A George III silver two-handle cup and cover
John Carter, London 1773
Baluster form profusely chased with trailing fruiting vines and other fruits, engraved crowned monogram to the front within a rococo scroll cartouche, further chased with a song bird above, a stylised urn upon a plinth on the opposite side, all above simulated brickwork, with bead rat-tail and leaf capped handles, spreading circular foot with gadroon band, the unmarked shaped-dome cover chased with fruiting vines and a leafy finial, height 32cm, weight 47.2oz.
Footnotes:
The date of assay leads to the engraving of the monogram and coronet being likely to be owned by Augusta Frederica of Great Britain (1737-1806) the granddaughter and eldest child of George II of Great Britain (1727-60) and daughter of Frederick Lewis Prince of Wales (1707-1751) by Augusta (1719-1772) daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Attenburg. In 1764 she married Charles William Ferdinand Duke of Brunswick (1735-1806) and from that date was titled Duchess Augusta Frederica of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Her daughter Caroline was the queen consort of George IV of Great Britain.
