Description
A-35 Samurai sword surrendered by Rear Admiral Nobukagu Yoshimi on Wotje Atoll, Marshall Islands, in 1945. Accepting the surrender was Lt. Commander Wagner Mahlon Dickerson of the USS Baron. The sword has a green cord wrapped white fish-skin grip with age toned dragon menuki. Brass fuchi kashira. Iron 4-sided cloverleaf tsuba with a simulated aged design pattern. 26 1/4"clean blade with a "waves" temper line with sporadic high peaks. Tang is signed "SHOSHIN KO BUSE GITAE MASAFUSA SAKU". Also "SHIN GANE IRI KOKUIN" - meaning genuine core steel. Copper habaki. Dark brown leather covered black lacquered wood scabbard, one brass suspension ring. Accompanying the sword are: (1) Copy of the 1945 log of the USS Baron for 6 August 1945. (2) Copy of the Baron's roster - showing Dickerson in Command. (3) Copy of photos showing the surrender of Yoshimi to Dickerson. (4) 11 September 1945 letter from Yoshimi offering thanks for food and medical aid as well as inquiring about the well-being of his men. (5) Photos of Yoshimi, two in Navy uniform - one noted as Commander of the destroyer Sawakaze. (6) 1947 postcard from Yoshimi mentioning past remembrances as well as his university studies of medicine. (7) Two-page letter of bringing Dickerson "up to date" on family matters. (8) 1947 account of Yoshimi's "Japanese Sword Material". Written on a large Manila envelope. (9) Two data CD's on the USS Baron and the Japanese surrender. II
