Description
Native American, Southwest, New Mexico, Tesuque Pueblo people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-built terracotta sculpture of a "Rain Deity" seated with "mitten" hands over their eyes. In the late 19th century, the Tesuque Pueblo people began to sculpt small pottery figurines, such as this for sale under the pretense they were rain deities to encourage tourist sales - there is little evidence as to the origin of the form. The figures evolved in the 20th century into artisanal and imaginative pieces of expression and identity Tesuque Pueblo culture. Size: 3.25" L x 2.5" W x 6" H (8.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 15.2 cm)
