LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE
A collection of correspondence from American and French members of the famed WWI French aviation unit, as follows:
1.HALL, JAMES NORMAN. 2 Typed Letters Signed ('James Norman Hall' and 'James N. Hall'), to Jacques Mortane of La Guerre Aierienne, 2 pp, 4to, Colfax, IA, August 2 and December 24, 1919, the later letter mentioning the book that he and Nordhoff have written on the history of the Escadrille. Nordhoff and Hall would go on to write a series of popular histories from the 1920s-1940s.
2.PARSONS, EDWIN C. Autograph Letter Signed ('Adj. E.C. Parsons' and 'Ted Parsons'), to Jacques Mortane mentioning recent exploits including downings, in French, 2 pp, 8vo, n.p., October 11 and 14, n.y., with integral address. Mentions a recent victory of French flying ace Lieutenant Barny de Romanet in a biplane and 18 recent victories of the Escadrille members.
3.MASSON, DIDIER. 1886-1950. Autograph Letter Signed ('D. Masson'), sending Mortane a photograph to use in his publication, 2 pp recto and verso, 8vo, [Paris], n.d., on 7 Rue Mirabeau letterhead.
4.[HOSKIER, RONALD WOOD.] Autograph Letter Signed of H.C. Hoskier, to Mortane clarifying the younger Hoskier's military record, 4 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoining leaves), Paris, May 21, 1917, on black-bordered mourning stationery. Hoskier's parent objects to the information contained in the report of the younger man's death in battle, particularly the under-reporting of his kills, and asks for a correction.
