This drawing is a preparatory sketch for a monumental fresco in a series illustrating the Life of the Virgin in the Cappella del Rosario in the church of San Vittore in Varese. Another sheet from this series, a modello for the Presentation of the Virgin, is preserved in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Unlike that drawing, this sheet is not squared for transfer and it retains its original arched-top format. These two sheets are the only surviving drawings relating to this commission.
