8vo (206 x 129 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece and 39 engraved plates by Hablot Knight Browne ( "Phiz"). (Lacking half-title, some spotting and toning.) Later brown half morocco gilt, edges marbled (some wear, joints starting). Provenance: "Lampard" (signature on p.[1]). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, with frontispiece in second state, plates 1, 2, and 4 in the earliest states, with many of the internal flaws mentioned in Smith including with "visiter" for "sister" on p. 123 line 17, and "latter" for "letter" on p. 160 6 lines up. (Some minor spotting and staining, a few short tears and captions shaved.) 20th-century half red calf gilt, edges sprinkled red (some soiling). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, with first state vignette title with the hook on the left arm of Captain Cuttle and most early issue points listed in Smith, including "if" missing in line 9 on p. 426, and no period at end of last line on p. 582, but with the later 8-line errata leaf mentioning 6 errors following p. xvi as in most copies.
