Description
1863 1st ed CIVIL WAR History Smucker Illustrated Battle Scenes Portraits Plates
“The best account of the Civil War” (Nevins)
Samuel Schmucker (or Smucker) was an important American historian best-known for his history of the Civil War. While numerous histories were published on the American war, this work, which was published during the war itself, is notable for including impressive illustrations – portraits and battle scenes alike. Sadly, Schmucker died in the middle of the war and was unable to complete his book himself. According to Larned,
“it is undiscriminating…it presents the story of the conflict as it was read in the newspapers of the period and in a reasonably compact form.”
Though, perhaps the best and most important view of this book comes from Nevins. Nevins states that Schmuckers Civil War is
“the best of the contemporary general accounts; largely military.”
