Lipman-Wulf came to the fore of the German art world as a sculptor, chosen to assume the position of the official State Sculptor of Berlin in 1933. However, because of his Jewish heritage this was not allowed under Nazi rule and he was forced to flee to France, where he was ultimately interned at the Camp des Milles alongside other artists and scholars between 1938-1940. During this time it was impossible for him to sculpt, so instead he turned to paper. Lipman-Wulf drew and painted many nature scenes, having developed a passion for it in his younger years. This attention to work on paper continued until his eventual escape from war torn Europe, and emigration to The United States in 1942. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the British Museum in London and the National Museum in Berlin among other collections.
