Description
Signed Mid-20th Century Victor Vasarely, 'Vega-Or' Op-Art Serigraph on Paper
Signed Victor Vasarely (Hungarian/French, 1908 - 1997). 'Vega-Or'. Serigraph on paper. Signed in pencil lower right and marked H.C (hors commerce - meaning artist proof not to sell), lower left.
From the 'Vega' series of the mid-1960's, which explores spherical swelling grids creating an optical illusion of volume.
Vasarely was trained as an artist in budapest in the bauhaus tradition. In 1930 he left hungary and settled in paris, where he initially supported himself as a commercial artist but continued to make his own work. During the 1930's he was influenced by constructivism, but by the 1940's his characteristic style of painting animated surfaces of geometric forms and interacting colors had emerged. His style reached maturity in the mid-1950's and 1960's, when he began using brighter, more vibrant colors to further enhance the suggestion of movement through optical illusion.
Sight - 8 3/4" high x 6 1/2" wide. Frame - 18 3/4" high x 14 3/4" wide.
