Description
Alfred Montgomery (American, 1857-1922). Oil on board painting depicting a still life of ears of corn spilling from a basket. Signed along the lower right.
A "farmer-painter" for most of his life, ears of corn were a staple in Montgomery's work from early on. He boasted that if he was crossing a street a horse would try to reach out and eat the corn that his paintings depicted. It took him nearly nine years to learn his unique technique of layering paint to produce a textured and raised effect for each kernel that add both depth and realism.
Sight; height: 14 5/8 in x width: 22 1/4 in. Framed; height: 20 7/8 in x width: 28 1/2 in.
