[CIVIL WAR]. Minor's patent folding pocket lantern.

Folding lantern consisting of Japanned metal panels with original mica windows, open dimensions 3 1/2 x 3 x 5 in., collapsed dimensions 5/8 x 3 x 5 in. (heavy finish wear to metal surfaces, with paint loss, wear and crackling to mica panes, occasional oxidation). Door panel opens to reveal interior tin wind shield and storage compartment for extra candles and matches. Exterior panels feature painted scroll designs, and one side also features painted text, "Minor's Patent. / Jan 24th / 1865." 

The patent for this pocket lantern was issued to John A. Minor of Middletown, Connecticut on 24 January 1865, being Patent No. 46,011. The folding lantern was designed to fit in a haversack or pocket for easy portability.
