Description
CHULALONGKORN THE GREAT (1853-1910). Engraving signed by King Chulalongkorn. Original engraving depicting a three-quarter view of the “Great Beloved King” in military garb. 305 x 241 mm. SIGNED BY KING CHULALONGKORN. Over the course of a reign lasting forty-two years King Chulalongkorn instituted various social and governmental reforms, including the establishment of a cabinet system, the creation of a modern railway system connecting the entire country, and abolishing slavery. These reforms were made in an attempt to counter western influence and, in the case of abolishing slavery, avoiding the bloody conflicts which had come so close to tearing western nations apart.
