Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay & Inca culture, ca. 1100 to 1500 CE. A fine pair of weaving tools: a deer antler awl and a wooden spatulate shaped batten or beater stick. The antler is heavily polished with an anthropomorphic head carved into the finial end, used like an awl or pick for weaving; the tip is completely smoothed to prevent snagging fibers. The beater has a lanceolate blade like shape with a rounded tip and an abstract finial, this tool would push the weft threads together to ensure a tightly woven textile. Size (wood beater): 11.6" L x 1.125" W (29.5 cm x 2.9 cm)

Provenance: private Plano, Texas, USA collection, inherited from father in the 1990s
