This vintage Shona sculpture depicts an abstract form of a woman. Shona sculptures are made by the Shona people in Zimbabwe. Most of the sculptures are made from sedimentary-stone, this one is likely serpentine stone. Zimbabwean stone sculpture as seen today began during the late colonial period of the 1950's and 1960's. This particular piece is signed “R. Rosani,” for Richard Rosani. Rosani was born in Zimbabwe in 1967, and trained in sculpture under famous Shona Sculptor, Nicholas Mukomberanwa. In 1992, Rosani was awarded a Certificate Of Excellence by the National Gallery Of Zimbabwe. In 1993 and 1995 Richard held exhibitions in England and the United States Of America respectively. This beautiful piece is 7.5 inches tall, 4.5 inches wide and 3 inches deep. It weighs 4.6 lbs.
