Description
A large Papua New Guinea Yipwon cult hook from Yesimbit Village, Black River, East Sepik Province. Carved wooden figure standing in profile with polychrome painted finish, featuring two faces decorated in relief above carved concentric hooks on an angled leg with carved detail. Used as an ancestral representation to be consulted before war and hunting. Some wear to finish and damage to wood including chips to three hook points. 96" high. ESTIMATE $1,000-2,000 PROVENANCE: From the Solomon collection in Wolverine Lake, Michigan. Purchased in Yesimbit Village in 1979.
