Description
A large Papua New Guinea food hook from Kandangai Village, Sepik River, East Sepik Province. Carved wooden figure with dark painted finish, featuring a standing male with inset spiral carved shell eyes and elongated nose below a hornbill flanked by two crocodiles, on a detailed body with carved decoration and bottom hook. Used to suspend food, clothing and ceremonial items. Some wear to finish, minor damage to wood. 72" high. ESTIMATE $800-1,200 PROVENANCE: From the Solomon collection in Wolverine Lake, Michigan. Purchased in Yesimbit Village in 1979.
