Description
A Xalitla Dancing Male Xochipala, Guerrero, Mexico, c. 1000 - 500 BC Solid buff clay with remains of red pigment (cinnabar). Depicts a youthful male figure with knees bent, holding a rattle in his right hand, leaning forward from his waist in a dance pose, his demeanor and facial expression full of intention and enjoyment. He wears a loin cloth and belt with a long flange at back. He also wears large foot protectors. His hair is pulled back and either tied to a hollow coiled object like a basket, or his hair is coiled and held in place by a wide ring. In good condition, probable repair or restoration to front of loincloth. With a metal stand. Provenance: A Private Collection, Santa Barbara, CA, collected in the 1960s Height: 4 ¼ inches
