Description
Large 1950 oil and textile on canvas of a mother and child entitled entitled "Madonna Criolla", by Nicaraguan painter and muralist Rodrigo Penalba. Considered the father of Nicaraguan Modern art, Penalba studied in Madrid, New York City, Mexico City, and Rome. He was director of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Managua from 1948 to 1973. Penalba's paintings have been exhibited and collected world wide, and in 1998 his paintings were featured on several Nicaraguan postage stamps. Signed and dated (19)50 upper right, with a Bienal Hispanoamerican Arte, Madrid, Spain 1951 exhibition label to verso. Frame, approx. 32 1/4" x 24 3/4". Sight, approx. 31 1/2" x 24".
