Description
Andean Loom Panel, 17th/18th C. Unique example of a very rare type of ceremonial cloth which may have had a matrimonial role during the colonial period. Though narrower than the llacolla it is possible that these unusual narrow cloths were the earlier form of that highly rectangular cloth. This example was once fringed and may have also once been one half of a large colonial balandron poncho before being co-opted for other rituals. Andeans often repurposed cloth to satisfy present day needs and condition is often most esteemed when thoroughly worn. Note the extraordinarily exquisite dye colors. Size: 8'8'' x 1'11'' (264 x 58 cm).
