Balinese "Saput Poleng" Silk Textile with Songket, Indonesia, Early 20th C. Balinese checkered silk cloth bordered with red silk with metal thread songket. This is a rare example in which the black and white checkered squares are complimented by red squares symbolizing energy and passion. Such textiles symbolized balance in the universe and adorned temples, statues and people. Provenance: Ex. Seth Hersh/Batikat Collection. Size: 3'2'' x 3'9'' (97 x 114 cm).
