Fine Collection of Cantonese Ship Paintings
First quarter 19th century. A collection of four framed watercolor and gouache paintings on rice paper. All Cantonese, meticulously detailed and with inscriptions on each. Also with inventory. Contains the following titles:
1) A Boat of the Emperors- used by Sculler only
2) A War Boat Covered with mats- mat used slows arrows
3) A Chinese ship called a junk for trading from 800 to 1200
4) The Viceroys Boat of State- at Canton
Largest sheet size 10.5 x 13.5 in. A well documented group of watercolors providing insight into the marine life in Canton, China during the early 19th century.
Provenance: Property of Betty Henshaw, Cincinnati, Ohio
