Description
c. 1855-1875, makers mark on bottom (Hui or Ooi according to the Peabody Museum)
overall ornate chased decorations with view of Canton, foreign factories site with flags, Dutch Folly Fort, people, pagodas, boats, and trees; dragon handle, 4.75"h; base 3"diam.; 7 troy oz.
Purchased Marika's, Boston by the late Richard Capurso. Then on long term loan to the Peabody Essex Museum, Essex, Massachusetts from 1987 to the present.
Comes with detailed description from the Peabody Museum.
Only two other mugs of this nature are known: one in a private collection in Newport, RI; the other formerly in the Chait collection of Chinese Export silver. These three mugs and a silver salver (maker Khecheong, 1847) at the New York Metropolitan Museum are the only known pieces of Export silver depicting the hongs.
