After a 3-year apprenticeship as a photographer in his hometown of Pribram, which he completed in 1901, Drtikol attended the Bavarian "Staatslehranstalt für Photographie" in Munich; after traveling and military service, he opened his first studio in 1907 in Pribram, where he took photographs in the tunnels of the silver mines using magnesium flash. These very rare photographs, which he offered as postcards, are the first known works of the important representative of Czech modernism.

Nach einer dreijährigen Fotografenlehre in seiner Heimatstadt Pribram, die er 1901 abschloss, besuchte Drtikol die Bayerische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in München; nach Reisen und Militärdienst eröffnete er 1907 sein erstes Atelier in Pribram, wo er in den Stollen der Silberminen mit Magnesiumblitz fotografierte. Diese sehr seltenen Fotografien, die er als Postkarten anbot, sind die ersten bekannten Werke des bedeutenden Vertreters der tschechischen Moderne.
