Description
GIBSON, Sybil (American, 1908-1995). Three Women on a Black Background. 1993. Tempera paint on newsprint (newspaper text on verso). Signed in pencil in the lower right corner. 27 x 23”. The usual wear. An excellent example. Gibson (née Aaron) was a self-taught painter from a wealthy Southern family and is considered a major figure in the Outsider Art movement. Despite her wealth, she lived most of her adult life in poverty. She was an eccentric woman, and several times during her adult life (once before her artwork was to be publicly exhibited at the Miami Museum of Modern Art) she disappeared with no contact from anyone; once when she disappeared, she left many original paintings strewn on the lawn outside of her home. It is believed that around 300 of her paintings survive in museums and private collections.
