Description
1611 Pope Paul V Spain RARE De Auxiliis Controversy Diego Alvarez Free Will
Diego Alvarez was a 16th-century Spanish Dominican archbishop. While he is much better known for his commentary on the book of Isaiah, Alvarez published an important work on human free will. At the time, Alvarez had taken part in an ongoing controversial debate on whether or not God determines mans actions or if man has free will. The controversy, better known as De Auxiliis, was quieted by Pope Paul V who stated that no more published material from either side could exist with permission from the Vatican.
This 1611 edition of Alvarezs remarks on the controversy was published after the Popes decree to refrain from publishing on the matter. It was published in Lyon by Cardon and is considered to be very rare today.
