Description
Fanciful Putti. Egg tempera on paper wrapped on board. Signed. Dimensions: 48" x 33". Sometimes winged, but always chubby, depictions of putti have decorated paintings, objects and architecture since antiquity. During the Renaissance, putti personified human spirit and emotion. By the 18th and 19th centuries, the popularization of romantic images turned putti into a symbol of love. Putti are neither cupids nor angels; they are secular figures, which allows them to get into quite a bit of mischief. Marianetti’s putti is adorned in a highly detailed flower sash and crown with a flowing curtain in the background. An intense student of all genres of classical painting from the Renaissance to the Rococo, Marianetti used with the classical but difficult medium of egg tempera to get detail and create layers of line and form resulting in impressive sculptural figures. Her egg tempera paintings were executed on paper and then secured to a card board surface for stability. The mural size was intended to be mounted and installed in paneling as a decorative feature for a room.
