Description
1874 1ed Arctic Experiences Capt. George E. Tyson Voyages Polaris Expedition
“What opportunities have been lost! And the expedition is to be carried back only to report a few geographical discoveries...with patience we might have worked up beyond Newman Bay, and there is no telling how much farther.”
–Capt. George E. Tyson
A rare, first edition collection of stories and historical accounts regarding Arctic exploration. The primary emphasis of this work regards the famous and tragic “Polaris Expedition,” the last of three expeditions commissioned by US government in attempt to reach and explore the North Pole. The Polaris would set sail in 1871 with its appointed captain, the famous Arctic explorer Charles Francis Hall. Sadly, the voyage would be plagued by insubordination, treachery, murder, and eventually shipwreck.
Capt. C.F. Hall would be murdered, leading to the decision for the Polaris to set sail back home. During the trip home the ship would run aground on an iceberg. During this time, part of the crew was separated from the ship and would become stranded in the Canadian side of the Davis Strait atop the ice floe for six months until their rescue by the whaler, Tigress.
