Zuni Petit and Needle point Jewelry began around 1920-1930 and was a unique form of Turquoise Jewelry created by the Zuni Indians. A Petit Point stone is a tiny round, oval, rectangle, pear or square shaped stone hand cut by a Zuni Indian Lapidarist. Needlepoint jewelry differs from petit point only in the shape of the stones. Instead of an oblong pear shape, needlepoint jewelry is made using turquoise in the shape of a long, slender piece resembling a needle. It’s a distinctive style that’s punctuated with only a sliver of stone against the metalwork of the piece. It requires careful stone slicing.
