Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Ruth Harris Bohan (American, 1891-1981). "Cloudy Skies" oil on board, 1924-1925. A picturesque view of Kansas in the 1920s by Ruth Harris Bohan. Bohan captures a dramatic contrast between the tranquil Kansas prairie lands - with its vast expanses of verdant fields dotted by vernacular houses and barns as well as white picket fences - and the foreboding skies above, presenting rolling grey thunderclouds threatening to replace the clear blue skies as a storm is brewing. A captivating composition, delineated with Bohan's meticulous brushwork and lush palette knife gestures, set in an attractive custom frame. Size: 7" L x 11.25" W (17.8 cm x 28.6 cm) Size of frame: 13.75" L x 18" W (34.9 cm x 45.7 cm)
Ruth Harris Bohan was born in Petersburg, Illinois in 1891 and studied at the Fine Arts Institute of Kansas City under Randall Davey as well as overseas in Europe during the 1910s. Bohan's work has been exhibited at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania among others. She was a member of the National Academy of Design, the Kansas City Society of Artists, and the Society of Independent Artists. Bohan also received many awards for her paintings including the Gold Medal for "Childhood" at the Midwestern Artists Exhibition of 1924; a silver medal for "The Sandpile" at the Midwestern Artists' Exhibition of 1927, and a bronze medal for "Still Life" at the Midwestern Artists Exhibition of 1925.
