Description
In this antique Qashqa’i gabbeh of comparatively fine weave, the field design is dominated by two huge midnight blue diamonds that merge along the central axis. They each enclose a central red diamond with white stepped outlines. The distinct difference in the sizes of these two interior motifs is a striking feature. The six triangular spaces along the sides of the field vary in ground colour and are decorated with small quartered diamonds and stepped polygons. A narrow border of squares arranged in a chequerboard design surrounds the field. – The colours include fuchsine, an early synthetic dye that fell out of use from ca. 1880-1890 due to its lack of fastness to light. The date of this rare gabbeh purchased by the current owner’s family at Sailer, Salzburg, in 1998, can thus be established. – Signs of age and wear, low spots in the pile, the original finishes survive all around.
