Description
Print is matted & unframed. Eliza Gardiner (1871-1955) was a nationally recognized printmaker & instructor at RISD who counted Martin as one of her most talented students. Using animals on he farm as subjects, Martin created several hundred woodcuts during her career. In 1931, a Providence Journal article praised her work , writing she relied "on textures to carry her design and she slashed into the wood or the linoleum with gusto, letting the chips fall where they may. Consequently, the blocks have a virility that is almost masculine in character". Martin taught at Lincoln School for her entire art teaching career while maintaining the family farm in Seekonk, MA. This image is of her sheep on her Seekonk farm.
