Description
A STERLING SILVER BOWL, INTERNATIONAL SILVER CO., PRE-1941, with an everted petal scalloped rim on tapering fluted sides and raised on ball form feet, verso marked "INTERNATIONAL / STERLING / D 246," and company logo of knight's helmet over shielded "S"; height: 4 1/4", diameter: 8 5/8", total approximate weight: 18.270 troy oz. Note: The design of this sterling bowl closely follows that of the early 20th century Austrian architect/designer Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) and his bowl designs for the Wiener Werkstätte (Viennese Workshop 1903-1932) during the 1920s. His use of the hammered surface and the foot mirroring the bowl during this period are admittedly different but the ball was a device used by him in his earlier decorative art designs and is applied here rather successfully. The International Silver Co was known the world over for its' sterling silver and the "D" used in the mark denotes that this bowl was of "Heavy" sterling silver.
