Designed in 1910 by Jeanne Lanvin to resemble 18th century court dresses. The Robe de Style's drop waist and full skirting marks the early twentieth century of the great ateliers.
Together with her husband Peter, Maria Monaci Gallenga illuminated the 1920s and 30s with the design strategies flowing from her Florentine studio. Recognized for innovation in print technique, Gallenga's wooden matrices and pigmented metallic powders mimicked a hand-painted feel. The stenciled textiles, cloaks, and capes of the Gallenga body of work often invoke Medieval and Renaissance art history, and currently grace the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
