Item Details

Description

A plastic green and red "black-a-moor" hat. It has layered plastic green leaves with studded green beading. Black-a-moor heads made of black felt with white eyes and red lips toped with red and gold hats. Embellished with red wings. Underside of hat lined in green netting and sage colored velvet. Side combs to fasten upon head. Labeled. Large hat pin inserted in the side.

Christened the Mad-Hatter of Chicago, Bes-Ben millinery shop opened in 1919 as a hub for the local clientele of the brother-sister duo Benjamin and Bessie Greenfield. Especially known for their more elaborate headwear of the 1940s and 50s, Bes-Ben utilized wartime rationing to create surreal, borderline absurdist hats out of nontraditional materials. Though the more whimsical Ben-Ben hats feature unconventional adornments of kitchen utensils and doll furniture, the intricate beadwork and delicate quality of their designs have capped the curls of Hollywood's most sophisticated starlets' Lucille Ball, Marlene Dietrich, and Elizabeth Taylor among them.
