Martin Margiela, though often associated with the Antwerp Six (a group of groundbreaking graduates from the Royal Academy) in fact preceded his Belgian contemporaries. After working as an assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier, Margiela founded his eponymous atelier in 1988, followed by a turn as creative director at Herm's. Nominally redefining haute couture, Margiela instead titles his couture lines "Artisanal" in reference to his affinity for the raw, rustic, deconstructed and regenerated. Known for ecological thinking, androgynous cuts, and stark asymmetry, Martin Margiela synthesized upcycling and luxury, an idea that remains pertinent to the welfare of the contemporary fashion industry. Since his retirement in 2009, Maison Margiela has been entrusted to John Galliano.
