Item Details

Description

The scarcer version of the single page North America maps by Jesse Olney with Texas extending its long stovepipe panhandle north almost to present-day Wyoming. Illustrates the extreme northern border the U. S. ever attained, with the famous “54, 40 or Fight!” border of Oregon Territory championed by President James Polk that wasn’t resolved until 1846. Above Texas is the Great American Desert. The U. S. border extends to the Pacific with Ft. Vancouver, Astoria, Willamette and Ft. Wallah-Wallah located. Alaska is “Russian Possessions.” Canada is “British America.” In this map, Mexico controls California and the Southwest. U. S. states are not delineated, but populations are noted in various regions (Texas listed as 500,000 pop.) Numerous Indian tribes and major towns are named. Numerous rivers and a vague idea of the “Rocky or Oregon” mountains are indicated. Drawn by Sherman & Smith. Not a common map. Overall soiling with a stain at upper left in the Pacific Ocean.
